The Dawn of the Wyrm

Omens of Fire

‘The Coming of the Wyrm’ from the Dwarven narrative and ‘the Omens of Fire’ from the Elven, speak of the arrival of the Dragons upon the world. This singular event takes place in different periods within each narrative yet nearly all narratives speak in the same manner as to the events.

Within this reinterpretation I have used the Dwarven Naming as the Dwarven appears in multiple narratives, Elven variant names have been included here emphasised within [Elven Name], however the Elven reflects only the post nomadic name as recounted within their spoken and sung narrative.

And so it came to pass that unto the skies of the world did come such a star as to light the very world in its passing. It was ‘Flame Mouth’ [Great Rising Fire Tail] the greatest of all the dragons. Within his great white tail did he nurture many of his subjects, for Flame Mouth was king of all the heavenly beasts. The Pride of Father Sun and Mother Moon in their children and the world itself was so great that news of its beauty had spread far and wide within the heavens. Curious and lustful for all things beautiful, ‘Flame Mouth’ came unto the world to see for himself that which gave the Father Sun and Mother Moon such pride. And there in the heavens above the world did ‘Flame Mouth’ greatest and father of all Dragons, see the world in all of its beauty set forth below him.hH grew jealous of those blessed to be upon such a beautiful jewel for his children were not among the blessed of the world.

So it was that in his passing ‘Flame Mouth’, greatest of all the heavenly beasts and Wyrms, did leave many of his subjects to bask in the beauty. And there the kin of ‘Flame Mouth’ known unto the peoples of Earth as ‘Children of the Wyrms’ [Star Seed] did race about the heavens in their path, first away from the world in chase of their great Lord, then back to the world they would come, for they loved the world below them and could not bear to be away. So it remained for a great age that above the world the children of ‘Flame Mouth’ did come and go in their passing. Each and every Three and Seventy days did they return, and oft in the great distance did the peoples of the world see ‘Flame Mouth’ himself as he returned to watch upon the world and his Kin above it.

Then upon the coupling of the Father Sun and Mother Moon did come another great star to the skies. It was ‘Spitfire’ [Roaring Fire Death] hated brother of ‘Flame Mouth’, and he came to the world in such fury that his passing shook the very heavens and the earth. Hateful he was of his brother and his many subjects and through his hate did he birth his malice. Unto the heavens did ‘Spitfire’ grant his greatest child, ‘Icelance’, there to fight and harass the children of ‘Flame Mouth’, to kill all he could of his brothers’ kin.

So it was that upon the mantle of the heavens did great violence erupt as ‘Icelance’ [Bitter Wind] and his host did descend upon the followers of Flame Mouth. For countless passing of the Father Sun and Mother Moon did the ‘Children of the Wyrms’ do battle in the heavens. The passing of each day bore witness to the dulling of the light of the defeated and unto the world below were their remains cast, in balls of fire did they turn as to ash above the forests and oceans.

‘Icelance’ was restless in his pursuit and spiteful in his ways so as to force those kin of ‘Flame Mouth’ to face him. In confrontation did they meet death, for ‘Icelance’ was the greatest of all the ‘Children of the Wyrms’. So it was that within the heavens the last of the great subjects of ‘Flame Mouth’ did conspire to rid the heavens of ‘Icelance’. It came to pass then with conspiracy that ‘Firespitter’ [Nobel Flaming Eye] greatest of all the subjects of ‘Flame Mouth’ together with ‘Waterspitter’ [Fair Sky Jewel] fairest of the great one did descend upon ‘Icelance’ with a great host. There great battle was raged, and such light was cast that it lit the night of the world below as to the day for six passings of the Mother Moon. With torrential clamour did the subjects of ‘Flame Mouth’ finally defeat ‘Icelance’ and his horde, but ‘Icelance’ did not flee to hide amongst the lights of the firmament, instead in his malice, turned and fled unto the world below, vowing to scare it and detract from its beauty ever more.

And so it was that the first of the Dragons came to the world, and with hateful intent and indifference did he come. Upon the world did he lash out as he came, for ‘Icelance’ and his many heads  cast the forests and plains to fire, Burning tree and animal and people alike. Too did he set ice to rivers and lakes, freezing all within them with his passing. But from his greatest head, that set within the centre of his many, he vaulted such gloom into the skies of the world as to block out the Father Sun and Mother Moon for a great age. About him too, as he fell to earth, did those of his host still loyal cast their hate-filled glare upon the lands, turning life to stone and burning the world further with their spitefulness.

Great tumult came unto the world upon the arrival of ‘Icelance’. The Earth did rise and fall beneath his feet, great fires spread across the North of the world burning all in their frenzied path. The multitude of smokes arisen from the infernos mingled with the vomited gloom of his passing.

From afar, the world looked dark upon the blackness of the heavens and from their place among the heavens did ‘Firespitter’ and ‘Waterspitter’ hear the screams of those below, those trapped beneath the gloom. Vengeance was upon them and in the hearts of those of their host that remained, for the evil of ‘Icelance’ had corrupted the once beautiful world. Yet they feared joining the world below, for to do so may invite further destruction upon it. So it was that from their host they did choose one who was to plunge down upon the gloom and once there to seek out a place for the arrival of ‘Firespitter’ and ‘Waterspitter’, a land devoid of life so precious. Thus came ‘Longeye’ [Searching Dark Sky] to the world below the gloom, and he saw a world of frigid white. Urgency took him, and soon aloft once more he did rise and smote the gloom with his fiery breath.

Upon seeing the clearing of the gloom but not heeding the warning of ‘Longeye’ down upon the world did come ‘Firespitter’, angriest and most vengeful of the heavenly host. Upon the coastal lands did he fall, shattering the land beneath him and laying waste to the coast. Alas it was, for in their haste to bring justice unto ‘Icelance’ did they forsake those upon the land, for the Great Elven forest lay upon the coastal plain upon which ‘Firespitter’ descended. His arrival did rend the forest from the earth and cast it upon the four winds. About him too did come a host of his followers, laying more destruction upon the desolate land. In the wake of their coming did the grounds about them collapse in fire. Seeing his descent and witnessing the fires that sprung from his arrival, ‘Waterspitter’ too fell upon the earth, for concern there was within her. The fires had again risen and from her vantage within the Heavens did she hear the screams of those who fell beneath the arrival of ‘Firespitter’. To the ocean off from ‘Firespitter’ did she come, and upon her arrival did she cast great waves upon the burning lands of the shattered coast, filling the collapsed lands with her Ocean swell. About her too did come her host and to the lands and seas about did they come. Yet with the coming of ‘Waterspitter’ did the fires subside and the vast waters she  cast into the skies did rain down, drawing the gloom from the heavens. And so once more the Father Sun and Mother Moon did look down upon their world and curse the coming of the Wyrms to their most beloved of realms.

Great sorrow did fall upon the subjects of ‘Flame Mouth’, for once upon the world did they see the destruction that their heedless charge had created. Unto the Father Sun and Mother Moon did they plead for forgiveness, and aft a time it was given for there was no malice in their charge. All save ‘Icelance’ and his kin were forgiven and allowed to roam the world unhindered. As for ‘Icelance’, Father Sun sought him upon the surface and where he found his kin did Father Sun burn them, forcing them to delve within the lands for their safety.

Great sorrow was upon the world, for with the coming of the first day after the longest night did the peoples of the world account for their losses.

Of the Children of El

Many were lost, for their lands were wooded and many burned at the coming of the Wyrms. Of their former city homes, near all were lost save a few. Greatest loss of all to the children of El was the loss of the Great Elven Wood. Upon the plain did it once stand, now ash beneath the feet of ‘Firespitter’.

Of the Children of the Sister Twin

Whose cities were upon the shores of the seas, the coming of ‘Waterspitter’ did great harm and many towns were washed clear of the world.

Of the Children of Dwar

The great city of Deepguar, gateway to the underworld and guard to the shadow vault, was lost beyond finding. So too was the House of Dwar itself lost, and along with it the line of Torrin second son of Dwar did pass into history.

Of the Children of Saiy

Who suffered the least of all the peoples of the world, they took unto their realm those things now lost to the world, and unto the shores did they return them piece by piece so as their cousins and brothers upon the lands could rebuild.

In time did the children of the mother moon and father sun come to meet in passing the children of the first Dragons, and in their meetings there was equal part fear and pleasantry for it was discovered that the children of the first dragons were as men upon the world, some honourable and fine, other malicious and evil.
