In the beginning

The Sun, lost upon his wanderings came eventually unto a world dark and barren. There he stopped and looked down upon it, casting his light into all the passages upon the world. There as he watched from behind the world came into view the most beautiful of all the sights that he had seen upon his great journey. She was the Moon and her beauty took the Sun into great rapture. So it was that he chased after her as once more she passed behind the world. Their dance lasted many months until on one time together they came, and in their mutual love for each other their children were conceived.

Such great love the Moon had for the world below her that it was unto this beloved place they placed their children.

Upon beginning their descent did the ground of the world reach up unto the heavens in the shape of a great tree, and there at the threshold of the heavens did the tree meet El and his Siblings, the children of the Sun and Moon. The great tree known as El’ Drasel[1] did offer such great footings as to allow the Children of the Sun and Moon to alight the heavens and climb down to reach the world below.

First there was El and upon the surface of the world he grew and wandered.

Second was Dwar and below the world he took to his wanderings.

Third was their daughter Saiy and unto the waters she took.

Forth were the twins and to all areas they took to exploring.

Save for the beauty of the great tree upon which all made their passage unto the world, the children soon grew tired of the barrenness of their new home So it was that unto each the Sun and Moon did gave a small bag of stardust, and unto each they said:

‘Go unto your realms of your choosing and there place this great dust, from it shall grow life of all kinds to bring colour to your world’

And so it was that the children of the Sun and Moon explored their realms once more but now in their passing plants began to grow upon the ground and from the rocks animals of all kinds sprang forth. Soon the surface was green and of such lovely appearance that it caused the Moon to weep with happiness; her tears fell unto the world and in its shower the plants of the surface world thrived. Within the depths of the world, the tears flowed down ever deeper until a great lake came to be. There Dwar the second son set up his home for the lake of tears shone in the darkness with a silver light such as to remind him of his mother the Moon and it gave him great solace. Unto the waters of the world, too, these tears ran causing great beauty to be imbued unto it.

The Peopling of the new World

As the new plants of the world grew of age, the Sun and Moon once more called to their children and the children came.

Unto El they gave twelve seeds that they had taken from the very top of the world’s greatest trees and unto him they said:

‘Take these seeds, you are now Adar El, father of your children. Go back unto your realm now and there fashion from these seeds the form of your children’, and so he did, fashioning a peoples of great elegance and beauty. They were of El and called themselves El’ven meaning of El.

Unto Dwar they gave twelve stones that they had taken from the depths of the lake of tears and unto him they said:

‘Take these stones, you are now Adar Dwar, father of your children. Go now back unto your realm and there fashion from these stones the form of your children’ and so, like his brother, he went back under the lands and there he fashioned a peoples squat in stature and strong as stone. They were of Dwar and called themselves Dwar’ven meaning of Dwar.

Unto Saiy their first daughter they gave twelve drops of the most precious water that shone from within, and unto her they said:

‘Take this water, you are now Edan Saiy mother of your children, go back unto your waters and within them fashion from this the most special of all the waters in the universe the form of your children’ and so, as her brothers had before her, she went unto her watery realm and there created a peoples of such beauty that they outshone all the creatures of the seas. They were of Saiy and they called themselves Saiy’ven meaning of Saiy.

These children, the first of the gods themselves were the Miandi, first among all the offspring of the ancestor gods.

The Twins came unto their parents before they were called in turn and unto their parents they said ‘Oh most beautiful Mother, Edan Moon, and Father, Adar Sun who light our very world, we ask of you little for children we have no wish, only we cannot walk as our siblings do upon this the most beautiful of worlds for as clouds and mist we are formed. We ask only that from time to time we too may become solid as our siblings and walk among them and their children beneath this sky of your making.

The Sun said unto his youngest the twins, ‘A life between all realms you have chosen for yourselves and between all realms you may pass unhindered. Yet as the world changes with each season, so too may you both, for one week in each season you may walk upon the Earth in a form as solid as those of your brothers and sister. There you may enjoy as one from the Earth the beauty that each season provides, but upon the end of the week you must return unto your realm until the passing of that season’. The Moon gave unto each of the twins a cloud form and to each she spoke. ‘One day you may wish to have children of your own for a life without children can become hollow and without purpose, so unto you I give this, a cloud of the same material as you yourselves. From this as you desire you may become Adar and Edan and fashion as you wish your own children when time is right’.

Whispers, the Failings of Pride, and the fall of El

So it was that the world continued and the children of the world prospered and flourished, under the Sun and Moon and with the cherishing of their Adars and Edan.

One day many ages on, Adar El was abroad and took to visit his Brother Dwar in his home, There for the first time he bore witness to the beauty of the Lake of Tears[2] and saw with great jealousy the wondrous creations beneath the Earth that his younger brother had made, and he coveted them for his own children. His visit to his Brothers realm was not a happy one, for upon each turn and within each cavern he saw such beauty as to have no rival upon the surface of the world, for each tree and plant upon the surface there within the caverns of the under lands were to be found its match or better. For the plants of the underlands had light of their own given unto them by the hand of Dwar, and too within the walls and rocks themselves were imbedded jewels and metals that sparkled liken unto the stars in the heavens. Adar El’s pride was sorely wounded by this, for he believed as the first of the children of the Sun and Moon that it was his right and his alone to hold in his hands all the most beautiful of the creations under the stars and he planned to take from his Brother Dwar this beauty and present it to his children for their pleasure. Upon the surface once more, Adar El spoke unto his children and told them of the beauty and wonder there in the lands below their feet and too their pride was wounded, and they sought also to claim this beauty for themselves, for like their Adar they believed that theirs was the right to have all things of great beauty. There within their wooded realm they planned to rip the very earth open and to expose the Lake of Tears to the sky so all could marvel in its beauty.

The brother Twin watched the children of his eldest Brother El and being not as pleasant of spirit as his Sister Twin, he took with great pleasure to whispering into the ears of the children of El, poisoning their minds with great greed and jealousy. Here he nurtured their jealousy and in doing so brought rise to hatred within their hearts, too he whispered unto his eldest Brother El causing much anguish within him.

So it was as winter came upon the lands above the Lake of Tears, El and his children sought finally to rend open the Earth and take from Dwar his Lake of Tears, pushed ever onwards in their jealous hatred by the whisperings of the Brother twin.

There upon a great and open plain, using such Magick as the world has yet to see since Adar El and his children tore open the very earth, in their doing they scared the Earth with a great Caldera of unimaginable depth. Deep into the Earth they bore, pushed ever onwards by the failings in their pride and the whispers of the unseen Brother twin.

After a time, the children of El did finally lay their eyes upon the lake beneath the surface and they were stalled in their efforts, for the beauty of the lake was unsurmountable and all desires left them in the wake of such a vision.

Yet failure was upon them, for the damage done unto the world in their efforts was too great and before their very eyes did the cavern within which the lake did dwell collapsed upon the lake itself, smothering it forever. Too the earths of the world above fell upon the house of Dwar crushing and smothering until, to the dismay of Adar El and his kin, did they see that all was buried and lost.

Dwar and his children, who were afar from the Lake of Tears, heard the great tumult and came with haste to the door of the house of Dwar, and there they saw with great sorrow that the door was all that remained of the house of Dwar, and from it flowed a small spring, all that remained of the Lake of tears. There too did they witness Adar El and his children in hasty retreat. Vengeance grew rapidly within their hearts for here too the Brother Twin whispered his vile words and soon they sought those that had caused so great an insult unto their realm.

To the surface they rushed and there upon the rim of the great caldera they fell upon the children of El, both the children of Dwar and El taking to violence upon each other. Soon the children of El evaded their cousins, for they were fleeter of foot and fled into the safety of the woods and forests, but upon their heels were the children of Dwar full of the great need for vengeance.

So it was that the children of El took to rest within the canopy of a great wood on the edge of a vast plain. Across the plain and under an outcrop of the last mountain the children of Dwar waited and watched. Soon the cousins came once more unto violence upon each other with fists and feet in the center of the great plain causing great wounds and much heart ache.

Here upon the great plain did Adar El come upon one of his Brothers sons. The son was the better of all of El’s children that he came upon and El in rage sught to end his constant victories. There El came to battle against his nephew and it was of such ferocity and length that all those upon the field itself stopped in their own acts of violence to watch the battle between El and his nephew. Dwar, rushing to his sons’ aid, came upon the scene and his heart filled with great pride for his son was proving a match for his elder brother, but before his eyes the tide of battle swung and El brought down such a blow upon his nephew as to force him to the floor never to rise again.

At this, El froze upon the spot for he realized what it was that he had just done, and there too understood the folly of his pride and jealousy. Dwar with a scream of anguish took unto his arms the body of his son and carried him away to the shelter of the Mountain along with many of his children and his children’s children. El so wretched with shame and sorrow carried himself from the battlefield in such great haste as to leave his children behind him but many who saw him leave followed suit with shame upon their shoulders.

Seeing the victory of their father over the son of Dwar, the children of El who remained upon the plain were filled with renewed vigor and set upon once more the children of Dwar. El filled with shame and wreathed in regret did disappear into the great forest with a great host. Dwar too did leave the field, there at the base of a great mountain did he shelter, and with a host of his own did her tend to the body of his fallen son.  Between the two brothers upon the plain those of their children whose minds were so bent on violence set about each other once more with fist and feet.

So it was that the Father of all Adar Sun came upon the great plain and both anger and pain grew within him in equal measure and with such speed that upon seeing the lifeless form of Dwars’ second child, he cried out and tears of his anger and pain fell upon the plain below, as the Moons had so very long before, but the tears of the sun brought with them the anger he felt and of those they touched upon the open plain were tainted with this anger and felt also the pain which the Sun himself was feeling. So it was, that deformed by the pain and anger they felt, they fled from the plain seeking shelter from the Sun in the woods and the caves below the mountain. Of those sheltered already within the wood and beneath the mountain, no tear of the sun touched, but great pain they all felt as they watched their brothers and sisters upon the plain become burned and deformed by the sun’s wrath. Until it was that upon the plain only two figures remained standing amidst the raining tears of the sun, and with each striking of a falling tear so the anger within each grew as their skin burned and their bodies became more misshapen, and before the sheltering hosts of both Adar Dwar and Adar El they pointed and spoke in unison.

‘A curse be upon you Dwar and upon you El. For my accursed form and the hatreds in my heart be of your making, for each of our brothers and sisters that this rain has corrupted so shall I take from thee one of thine own. Know this, no friendship shall there ever be between our peoples and yours from this day forward’.

With this being said, the shorter of the two, that which had once been the grandchild of Dwar named Golin, fled from the plain and into the mountains. There within the darker realms did his people wither in stature yet grow vile of mind. The other, the taller. Orcash who had once been a grandchild of El, fled also from the plain and into the woods and hills beyond[3]. There did the minds of his people wither yet their stature did grow.

It was not just the children of El and Dwar that suffered upon that field for the touch of the tears from the sun corrupted all life that it met. Animals touched turned black of heart and to spiteful angry feral things that sought out to kill those untouched by the tears. Plants that drank the water from the tears turned to poison in their stems and grew spiteful thorns upon their barks. Too unto the rivers and oceans of the world did the tears of the Sun make their way, there too did they corrupt and turn hearts black. And as with the tears of the Moon so very long ago, the tears of the Sun ran down into the lands below and there corrupted all life that they touched until eventually within the greatest of abyss’s in the under lands they fell in a waterfall to the center of the earth, and there as the tears gathered in such great number as to form a great lake, the heat from the anger held within them took to warming the very center of the world[4].

Unto the realm of the Twins, the coming of Death

The essence of Dwars’ second child Torinn who had died at the hand of his uncle El passed up unto the clouds, and there he beseeched the Sun and Moon for forgiveness, and there too the twins asked if he who passed through their realm could stay a while and not be banished from the world. So it was that the Sun and Moon agreed, into the realm between those who pass shall reside for a while but could not stay, for a year and a day they can remain as to children unto the twins.

This took from those who heard the words of the Moon and Sun some of the anguish of Torinns’ passing, for they knew that within the halls of the twins their kin would dwell in happiness if only for a while.

Thus how the world remained for an age, the spitefulness of the brother twin poked and prodded at the minds of both El and Dwar, never to settle, always distrust. Yet the world turned in its way and uneasy peace fell throughout the lands.

Mother Moon and Father Sun turned unto their children calling each unto the heavens in turn and said:

‘You have brought death unto this world and now your world is accursed. Death has come to your world children, our most beloved of all things and with its coming now your children too must answer to it. So now for death is among you, we must give unto your children a time upon the earth before which death cannot take them unless death is brought unto them‘.

Turning to Adar El did Mother Moon say:

‘Unto this world death did you bring by your own hand El our firstborn, thus life it is that shall be your penance. We grant you the longest of all the lives upon the world, and with this life shall you and your children tend to the world and all its life.

At this did El hang his head in shame, and thus he did reply:

‘For our foolishness and flawed pride that has caused these most cruel of acts, I accept willingly this twofold curse and blessing’.

And here he also decreed:

‘One thousand years of life, be some more be some less, will never make amends for that which we have all lost at pride’s hand, yet a long life it is and with which we are to tend the green ways of the world. Let it be then that in the green ways we are to find the beauty that we sought, and therein are we to follow the beauty wheresoever it should travel. Hence forth, we are to forgo the cities of old, save one house that shall tend to them to ensure the beauty therein remains for all to see, as it should have been all along’.

And so it was from that day forward that the Children of El became as wanderers upon the earth, always seeking the next place of beauty.

Yet unto El did Mother Moon grant but one gift, to aid El and his peoples in the tending of the Greener ways.

‘Unto you El our first child we grant you the gift of companionship upon your long journey as shepherds of the green ways’

and with these words she gave unto them the spirits of the forests and greener places,

‘To aid your peoples in their stewardship of the greener ways’

Unto Dwar did Mother Moon next turn.

‘Dwar our child, loss did you feel most grievous, and in that loss we know more pain resides for thy second son took with him unto the halls of the twins great understanding of the world, now alas lost’

‘Yes dearest Mother off all’ did he respond unto her ‘The loss was many fold, and to live an eternity within the corruption that now festers within his underlands would be too much and would taint the joy of the life we have.’

And so the Mother Moon continued

‘So be it Dwar our second child, unto this world you are bound for half that of your brothers kin’.

Saying unto those gathered Dwar spoke:

‘Alas my Mother this may be more than some can bear. With your blessing, dearest Mother Moon and Father Sun, I offer this: for those who grow weary of life amidst such corruption I shall create a way for them to join my second son and those that have gone before them’.

Here he drew a chalice from his bag and said:

‘The Chalice in the spring. One year and a day from the drinking thereof, they would pass unto the halls of the twins there to reside for a year and a day before going to their rest eternal’.

And he would place this chalice in the spring that flowed out from his door through which the last of the Lake of Tears flowed.

Free now as they all were from the spiteful whisperings of the Brother Twin Adar Dwar felt the love for his brother and forgiveness overwhelmed him. Turning to his brother El’, he told him also that in drinking from this chalice his children too could free themselves of this world should their need be great enough, and El thanked him for his kindness.

Yet unto Dwar did Mother Moon grant one gift and unto him did she say:

‘Dwar, sturdiest of all our children, of those gathered here you have felt the sting of loss deeper than any’

Mother Moon passed unto Dwar a book,

‘Take this gift our second son, the gift of knowledge, fast shall thy people learn and great things shall they construct with the knowledge gifted here. But warn you we must for knowledge alone is not enough to see your people through. Use thy knowledge, but strive also for wisdom, for knowledge alone is but a blessing and a curse.’

Now Mother Moon turned upon her daughter, the fair Edan Saiy, and saw that great tears did fall from her cheeks for her children had done nothing to deserve this, but her Mother the moon turned to her and said.

‘You think this unjust our dear daughter for nothing you did to deserve this curse of death, but we say unto you that also nothing you did to prevent it. Rightly or wrongly, death is now upon your world and your children must answer to it’.

Saiy nodded, for she understood what little she did to prevent the evil deeds of her brother.

‘And so our fair daughter, we bestow upon your peoples a life equal to that of thy brothers kin, half that of El thy eldest, ample is the time to bask within your ocean realm.’

At this the Mother Moon’s countenance grew darker.

‘Dear daughter, there is a penance for thy inactions upon those darker days, this day we give to you and we take in equal measure. But first the gift, for ten years never more may your people walk among thy brothers’ kin upon the lands of the world. Amidst them your children may wander, yet here we take from you our daughter, their eyes shall not see thy children’s true form, for in their eyes as their own children shall they appear. In this fashion shall your people be the voice of reason amidst the mob, the calm to their hate, the peace maker in the form of one of their own’.

Of the Twins little blame could be produced, for none knew of the evil whisperings that fueled the fires of that hateful time.

The Sister Twin did ask, ‘children we have none dearest Mother Moon, yet our siblings children we get for a year and a day upon their passing, and so shall it be. From the very clouds of which you gave us to craft children of our own fashioning, shall we create the creatures of the between world that guide those who have passed to our door, for we wish not the essence of those who have passed to become lost upon their journey’.

The Brother Twin undone

‘Mother Moon can we not undo the harm that has befallen our Brothers and Sister for they alone are not at fault? Shame be upon me, dearest parents; for my brother, my twin had a hand in the events that brought death unto this world and I fear he has taken to a dark heart’.

The Sister Twin wept tears upon the knee of the Mother Moon as she spoke.

‘His Tower in the North remains empty and foulness has crept into the creatures of the between that I have so lovingly crafted as mine own. I fear, Mother and Father Dearest, that the foulness is of my brother’s doing and that now those who pass from the world must meddle with tricks and lies designed to lead them away from my Hall, for what purpose I know not.’

So the Sun and Moon called for the Brother Twin but he was nowhere to be found, for he had heard the words his sister had spoken and had fled unto the depths of the earth where he hid near the lake that had formed from the angry tears of the sun. But alas, he had dwelt too close to the burning anger and pain of the lake and, as it had with all things on the world, this anger and pain seeped into the very heart of the Brother Twin corrupting him further. Turning his mischief into malice and his spite into wrath. And there he called to the creatures of the beyond realm that he had tainted with his ways and corrupted them further. He corrupted them and instructed them to bring unto him the essence of all those who pass from the world and to bring them unto him here in this boiling pit within the earth, for here he will consume them and with their power grow ever stronger.

And there upon an outcrop of rock within the churning lake of the suns tears did the Brother Twin gather and, complete the mightiest of his dark workings. The Brother Twin forged anew a creature as if made of the black blood of the Earth itself, yet as insubstantial as the fog that floats upon the sea. Unto this fell beast he bid:

‘Go forth now my child, greatest of my children, go now unto the world and bring to its peoples a fear so great that they curse the sinking of the Sun and despise my Mother the Moon for her coming brings forth the darkness. Go now my nameless horror, my consumer of souls, go now unto the world and wreak havoc upon its peoples’.

Far above upon the heavens The Mother Moon and Father Sun could do little to change that which had come to pass save one act. With hateful anger, the Father Sun smote the Northern Hall of the Brother Twin, casting it from its resting place and scattering it unto the winds of the world.

‘There now my Daughter see, thy brother’s home has gone, no souls shall pass his gates from this day forward, go now unto thy brothers and sister, tell them of this betrayal and warn them to be upon their guard’

And so she did upon that day descend unto the world in a form solid and true, and there did she impart the sad news of her brothers’ acts[5]. So it came to pass that the children of the Sun and Moon drew tight their bonds against the Brother Twin, the Nameless Sibling. And so the news of his deeds spread far and wide upon the wind and all soon reviled against him, vowing no shelter and no aid, no help to befall him until the day of reckoning before his parents the Mother Moon and Father Sun.

The Rise of Man

The Sister Twin came unto her parents and told them that she now wished to create children of her own, children that could walk upon each realm and in doing so look upon all the beauty of the world with their own eyes. So from what remained of the cloud she had been given so long ago, she fashioned a peoples[6].

Not as tall but taller

Not as Strong but Stronger

Of Water and Land

And Wisdom Bound.

And she gave unto them seventy years upon the world, far shorter a time than their cousins but to them she gave a thirst for all things and a keen ability to spread across the world. But last of all she gave to them a solid frame with which to be part of the world.

Her mother The Moon asked why it was that they were not to be of the between realm as she their Mother was and unto her Mother Moon she replied,

‘I will have each for a year and a day upon their passing and there shall be many, let them live upon the world for their short time, I will be with them soon enough’.

The Brother Twin heard of his sister’s plans and through trickery he found his way to his sisters rooms. Into the last of the cloud he passed what little remained of his own hateful cloud, and in doing so corrupted the purity of his sister’s children with his own evils. He knew that his corruption was to be only but a little for what remained of his cloud was so very small, yet he took great pleasure in the knowledge that his betrayer his Sister Twin would feel if only a little of his vengeance at the hands of her own children.

Last of all, the laughs came unto the Sister Twin for she had not used all that remained of her Cloud. She knew of her Brother’s need for vengeance and secreted away what remained. Great she did with it, small as it was small she made with it, but tiny as it was, it was pure of heart and so unto the world did she give her second children, of man in shape if not size. And unto these peoples she gave happiness in the simple things of the world, hard to anger and easy to laugh, as pure as her skills allowed.

Unto the other peoples of the earth did she give her second children.

Unto the Halls of Man did she give some of her second, to be tutored in the ways of man, to balance the evil within him.

Unto the forests of the Elves did she give some of her second, to learn the ways of the wilder places, to become as the children of El, swift shadows within the trees.

Unto the seas and her sister Saiy did she give some of her second, to swim within the seas and learn of the watery ways of the world.

Unto the Dwarves beneath the mountain too did she give some of her second, to learn the ways of the underlands, to be as one with the sunless places.

So it was that with Man and his little kin upon the Earth, the Children of the Sun and Moon drew back from the world, leaving it to be. As the Children of the Sun and Moon turned away from the world, the people upon it took flight, to search for a new home, one that did not remind them of the loves that had now left. The Children of El took to the woods anew, forsaking their cities of great beauty. For the children of Dwar, a great exodus was embarked on[7], into the deep of the world did they tread, and away from the Halls of Dwar and the last of the tears. Each of the Children of Dwar leading their peoples away, all save the children of Dwar’s second Son, for he had fallen at the hands of his uncle and none came forth to lead them. So to task they did go and the Halls of Dwar rang with life once more made anew and there within the Halls of Dwar did they remain, there tending to the old ways of the world. Of the Children of Saiy, little could be seen for into the deep they did go, away from the sky and the land, away from the peoples of the surface and underlands, away from the Sun and the Moon ever more.

The last betrayal

So it was that the Brother Twin did after a great time discover his sister’s last workings; little could he then do to corrupt the heart of her workings. So it was that the brother did send forth a great multitude of his unseen minions, into the very homes of his sister’s youngest children. There did they whisper great deceptions into the ears and minds of the purest peoples, and in time a corruption did spread through the minds of these people, a corruption that left their souls pure yet flittered upon the minds and thoughts driving darkness into their very actions.

And then upon a time did he too flee the world, to seek forgiveness and unification with his siblings and the Mother and Father. All the while happy in the knowledge that his workings upon the world would continue their ways and corrupt that which those who granted forgiveness so love.

[1] El Drasel, the great tree is known now by many names, yet to each name are the same legends affixed. El’ Drasel, Yggdrasil, Montar El, the tree of life whose roots span all lands and time, holder of the worlds memories and pathway of the before times.

[2] Here we encounter the only truly contentious point within this unifying narrative. Within the Elven Creation Myth it is said that the Lake of Tears pooled first upon the surface of the world and there it stood beneath the sky for all to marvel upon. It is said that the surface pool after an age upon the surface did begin to fade away to nothing, leaving the world entirely. Upon seeing the Lake of Tears beneath the world did Adar El see treachery at the hands of his brother Dwar, for he believed that the kin of his brother so enraptured with things of beauty did undermine the surface lake, draining it from the surface and sending it to the underlands below.

[3] More often than not the narratives indicate this point to be the birth of the Goblin and Orc races, each race being named after their ancestor upon the plain.

[4] Yet from such tragedy did come some solace in the form of great beauty, for in ages past the tears of the moon did pool in many places within the underlands, and there too did flow the tears of the sun, mingling and mixing together. And in those places where the two tears did mix, great wonder was created for in these rare pools did form a metal, liquid in its form but workable, known as ‘Two Tears’ in its original Dwarven (Tveir Rifa). It was a metal that mirrored the moon in its beauty yet did it carry an edge liken to the anger of the sun. A metal now known to many as Mithril.

[5] Here within each narrative do we find that each race believes that they were the first to be visited by the sister twin.

[6] Commonly considered that Humans followed, however there are certain works that seem to point toward the Halfling race preceding that of Humanity. This however is unsubstantiated in the main as the narratives of the majority place the arrival of Humanity prior to that of Halfling kind.
